In January 2021, the Raspberry Pi Foundation introduced its first microcontroller board, the Raspberry Pi Pico. The foundation also took a completely new direction with the integrated microcontroller chip RP2040: the RP2040 chip is the foundation's first in-house development. Until now, all Raspberry Pis used a system-on-chip (SoC) from Broadcom. The RP2040 features a 133 MHz dual-core Arm Cortex-M0+ processor with 2 MB of integrated QSPI flash memory for code and data storage. A wide range of flexible I/O options includes I2C, SPI, and - uniquely - Programmable I/O (PIO). These support endless possible applications.
