No, you can connect the lamps with the Yeelight App, but you have to be aware that the LED Smart Lamps can only be connected to the 2.4 GHz WiFi LAN. However, most modern smartphones connect via the 5 GHz LAN, so the app does not see the LED lamp. Either temporarily switch off the 5 GHz LAN of the router at home or choose a different name for the 2.4 and 5 GHz WLAN, then connect to the 2.4 GHz LAN, then the setup will work.
This may be a defect in the lamp. I therefore recommend that you register the item as a service case.
Yes, this can be done excellently with a Google Nest Hub, but the LED lamps could also be controlled with the Yeelight app, but it is more practical with the Google Nest Hub, because you can then say Ok Google, light on, light off, light on 50% or light on 100% and the LED lamp will do the same.
