Yes, the device can measure your current heart rate on demand. However, it only shows you what your current pulse is. The pulse is not used during training and how many calories are burned is not related to the pulse. For that you really need the chest strap that Under Armour also makes. as it says below, it is water resistant and can be worn while showering, but should not be worn underwater.
Water-resistant so you can wear 24/7. UA Band can be worn when showering, but should not be submerged under water
