Since I fitted the Patona battery grip to my Nikon D850, the battery consumption has increased dramatically. I switch off the camera and grip when I don't need them. After 7 days at the latest, both batteries are empty. What is the reason for this?

This is due to the crappy cheap battery grip. I am sure that this would not happen with an original Nikon battery grip and original batteries.

Does the BL-5 battery cover also fit on here?

I cannot answer this question. But I would not buy this product again: It already broke after 3 months on one of the small threads (for attaching the battery unit). I will buy the original Nikon battery grip and throw away the Patona product (109 francs in the bucket)!
