The 'newer' one no longer has the side programmable button and the sliding shoes are different (smaller), if you want the prog. button you have to buy the next more expensive one. That they have kept the name despite the obvious downgrading is somewhat misleading and insidious.

As far as I know, the Marathon is not available in ergonomic form. Personally, I use the MX Vertical https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/logitech-mx-vertical-kabellos-maus-9397107. I can only recommend it.

A new transmitter is supplied with the mouse. If you use the old transmitter, the Logitech software unifying new paired should work, I did it too.

Yes, various settings can be made with the Logitech SetPoint software! https://support.logitech.com/de_de/article/14977?product=a0qi00000069ujEAAQ Personally, I like the MX Anywhere and MX Performance mice from Logitech even more! Compared to other brands, the M705 is an absolute "top mouse" for me, and Logitech also offers the MX series ..... ;-)

I have the same mouse and can define the key assignment as desired in the Logitech SetPoint settings. Perhaps you have not installed the Logitech software? Then it could be that Windows recognises the mouse as the "standard mouse".

I have 2 pcs M705. One is four years old, the other four months. Both look exactly the same (except for the logo, the newer one has a different font, but it's not called "logi", but "logitech"). My old M705 didn't have a grey button 4 years ago. But both have more buttons than I need. Including 2 black ones by the thumb In general, I find the M705 ("Marathon Mouse") absolutely convincing, robust and durable. I would recommend it at any time.
