If you are using Windows, then there is a built-in burning function directly in the system, but it's not really the real thing.
The question is what you want to burn. If you want to burn audio or MP3 CDs, it is better to use a dedicated burning programme (or a media player with a burning function).

I also use the DVD device on a USB hub, but not the same one as you. It works wonderfully under my Linux (which, like MacOS, is also Unix-based).
The prerequisite is that your USB hub supplies enough power for the burner. I think that will work.

yes! but you can't play any films with it if you don't have any software or it's not included. hope that helped.
