Can the player really only play MP3, or also the increasingly widespread M4A (music from the itunes store, for example)?

No. You can't really expect that for this price either (please correct me, with a link is best). You will have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. This player only supports MP3 and no lossless audio format such as M4A or FLAC.
