According to the manufacturer, this is not possible because you have to pair the case with the headphones for charging. The headphones are then not recognised.

Truewireless in-ear headphones have no cable at all, e.g. AirPods. (Except maybe one to land the box). "non-truewireless" headphones may have a cable connecting the two headphones, like something like this: Bose SoundSport
Yes, you just need your phone to be Bluetooth 5.0 compatible :) (Which is the case with recent phones.)
Yes, it is possible to use only one, I do it very often. Everything is in the box ;-) The fit is very good and the sound reproduction is largely sufficient for my nomadic use.
