Hello. Yes, the mat has a strong smell. Don't worry, this will disappear after 1-2 weeks of use :-).

Better take the Pro, does not absorb liquids.

In my opinion, it is better that the mouse pad absorbs the liquid instead of spreading it all over the place, and the mat is also easy to wash out. :)
