In the late 1970s, the charismatic Isaac and Rebecca Walker led the Collective Justice Mission. They are labeled as radicals and feel persecuted by the U.S. government. Therefore, they move with their followers to the only place they believe they can create a socialist utopia: the jungle of South America. There, they establish Freedom Town. However, relatives left behind in the U.S. are worried: What exactly is happening in this jungle compound? The Church in the Darkness combines a unique story with thrilling top-down action infiltration gameplay in an open-ended environment.

As Vic, a former police officer, you travel to South America to reach Freedom Town and check on your nephew Alex. You can play however you want – you can evade detection, take down guards with non-lethal methods, or kill anyone who stands in your way. But you will have to live with the consequences of those choices. Each playthrough offers unique gameplay scenarios and story elements, with different characters and a changing narrative told through investigation and action. Follow the story through the town's speaker system, where the preachers spread their dogmas and beliefs. Find scattered documents and letters in the camp that give you clues about the true nature of Freedom Town.
