The syllable pencils come in two thicknesses: thin 7 mm or thick 11 mm. For the first half of the 1st grade, we recommend the thick pencil with 11 mm. After that, it is generally possible to switch to the thin pencil with 7 mm. Writing the syllables in two colors has two major advantages for learning to write: it regulates and structures the writing process, thereby supporting spelling. The color change prevents cramping of the writing hand while simultaneously promoting hand and finger motor skills. The syllable pencils have three flat sides, which automatically results in the correct finger position when writing (pincer grip). The color leads are very soft, so there is no need for strong pressure when writing or drawing. Our tip: The pencils should exclusively be sharpened with a sharpener that is equipped with metal blades.
