Their name is derived from the fact that their travel corresponds to a line when pressed. They do not have the same stroke as other switches that provide noticeable feedback. Linear switches recognise repeated keystrokes automatically. That's why you can enjoy full speed when playing games that require double or even triple taps. Due to the smoother movement, these switches are quieter than switches with tactile and clicky feedback.
