These filters allow for long exposure times even with higher sensitivity films, enabling the representation of motion in images through blurring, such as with waterfalls, streams, fountains, clouds, or moving cars. They also achieve larger aperture openings for a shallower depth of field, which helps to distinctly separate a subject, such as a portrait, from its background. Additionally, they effectively reduce the film sensitivity, allowing even high-sensitivity films (i.e., over ISO 400 27°) to be used in bright daylight. A highlight is their ability to enable correct exposures in bright environments like snow and sandy beaches or under extremely bright lighting, even with film and video cameras that have non-adjustable shutter speeds, preventing overexposure.
