You can carry it over your shoulder, by hand, or on your back. The main compartment features a padded laptop sleeve and a small zippered pocket. The entire bag can be folded into the front pocket when not in use. The outer fabric is waterproof, although the zippers and seams are not, meaning the bag can get wet but should not be submerged.
