Product details

Faber-Castell Pitt Monochrome burnt black chalk. Highest lightfastness, fat- and oil-free, easily smudgeable. Ideal for large-scale work as well as graphic details, traditionally used for figure drawing. Burnt chalks are harder and more brittle than unburnt ones. The color pigments do not adhere easily to the paper and therefore need to be fixed. In contrast, unburnt chalks contain special binders that give them a soft and smooth texture. The pigments are easily rubbed into the paper surface, and fixing is not necessary. There is also a distinction between fat-free and fatty chalks. Fat-free chalks can be relatively easily smudged and also blended with water. The color sits relatively loosely on the drawing surface and should always be fixed. Fatty chalks adhere more firmly to the paper due to the oil- and wax-based binder. They provide a smooth application with a satin finish. Additionally, they are harder to smudge and only limitedly erasable, but do not necessarily need to be fixed.
