The current processor
generation of the Core 6000 series, also known as "Skylake", requires a new socket and also new chipsets, among other things due to the support for fast and economical DDR4 RAM. In addition to the increased CPU performance, the significantly boosted graphics unit and the DDR4 support of the CPUs themselves, the new 100 series ("Sunrise Point") chipsets also offer some significant improvements. Instead of eight PCI Express 2.0 lanes, the top model of the Z170 chipset now offers a whopping 20 lanes, which are also around twice as fast with PCIe 3.0.
This is important, among other things, for the equipment with M.2 slots, which - depending on the mainboard - can now include up to three slots with four PCIe 3.0 lines each, where previously there was only one slot, which in most cases was also only connected with two data lines. With a bandwidth of around 4 GB/s per slot, this enables the use of several extremely fast M.2 SSDs and makes it possible to bypass the slower SATA 6G standard, which still exists up to six times. There have also been some changes in USB 3.0, of the maximum 14 USB ports, up to 10 now support the fast 3.0 standard and no longer just a maximum of 6. Overall, a Skylake CPU together with a Series 100 chipset represents a very modern and well-equipped platform.
The EVGA Z170 Classified 4-Way is a very well-equipped Z170 gaming mainboard in E-ATX format, which is an ideal basis especially for fast quad-core processors of the Core i7 or Core i5 series.As a Z170 board, it naturally also supports overclocking of K-series CPUs, which have a freely selectable multiplier. The black gamer board with grey heat sinks and covers has four DIMM slots for DDR4 RAM in fast dual-channel mode. For graphics cards, the board provides five PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, two of which are connected with a full 16 lanes. The other three slots in x16 format are connected to the chipset with eight lanes each, and an additional PCIe x4 slot is available for other plug-in cards.
If no graphics card is available, monitors can be connected directly to the rear of the motherboard thanks to the integrated graphics processor of a Skylake CPU - two connections are available for this with HDMI and DisplayPort. The EVGA motherboard also impresses with its excellent 5.1 sound, two M.2slots (Key M + E), eight SATA 6G ports, a total of (partly internal, partly external) two USB 3.1, eight USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, seven fan connections, two Gigabit LAN controllers from Intel (I219-V, I210-AT), XMP support and various overclocking features.
