Heinz Erhardt was born in 1909 in Riga. From 1919 to 1924, he lived in Hanover and in Wennigser Mark at Deister. His school attendance was not very successful. From 1924 to 1926, he was back in Riga, where he also struggled in school. He decided to leave. From 1926 to 1928, he studied music in Leipzig and worked as a trainee in a music store. From 1928 to 1938, he worked as a sheet music and piano seller in his grandfather's shop in Riga, which led to a major bankruptcy. From 1938 onwards, he was a humorist, cabaret artist, actor, chansonnier, writer, poet, composer, husband, father, and grandfather. According to a survey by Focus, Heinz Erhardt is Germany's most popular comedian. When asked, "Who makes you laugh the most?" 74.4% of respondents named Heinz Erhardt, placing him firmly at the top of the list. He was followed by Loriot and Otto.
