The DFRobot soil moisture sensor features a nickel-gold coating that offers good oxidation resistance. The sensor uses two probes to conduct current through the soil and then reads the resistance to determine the moisture content. The more water present, the better the soil conducts electricity (lower resistance), while dry soil conducts electricity poorly (higher resistance). This allows the sensor to alert you when it's time to water the plants, for example. The sensor can be connected to an Arduino via a 3-pin connector to build a comprehensive moisture monitoring system.
