The European bison, also known as the wisent, was declared Wildlife of the Year 2014. The wisent loves forested habitats, in contrast to its relative, the American bison or buffalo, which prefers prairies and steppes and is also referred to as the Indian buffalo. Both are enormous, with a shoulder height of over 2.5 meters, making them quite impressive. They had already become extinct in Europe but have since been reintroduced, and now they live again in small groups in our latitudes.
