Alpenleder exclusively works with full-grain leather. All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called open leathers, which do not hide their imperfections through structure embossing or color, but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is inspected by a specialist to determine if it is suitable for the bags. The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned: In the tanning process, no toxic chrome salts are used; instead, the leathers are tanned with tree bark. For dyed leathers, only azo-free dyes from European production are used. In a large part of the collection, even chemical dyes are completely avoided, and the leathers are preserved solely with oil. The unique feel, impregnation, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through boiling in pure plant fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scratches and scuffs through rubbing. Alpenleder bags become more beautiful the longer they are used.
