The manufacturer Alpenleder exclusively works with "full-grain leather." All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are known as "open" leathers, which cannot hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is inspected by a specialist to determine its suitability for bags.

The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned. In the tanning process, toxic chrome salts are not used as is common; instead, the leathers are tanned with tree bark. For dyed leathers, they exclusively use azo-free dyes produced in Europe. For a large part of the collection, they even completely forgo chemical dyes and preserve the leathers solely with oil. The unique grip, water resistance, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through boiling in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scratches and scuffs through rubbing.
