Wake-on-LAN (WoL)

WoL enables users to remotely power on or wake up a computer that is otherwise unavailable. WoL is a versatile technique that allows computers to be turned off when not in use. When WoL is enabled, power is maintained to the network adapter, and network packets continue to be processed. When a valid WoL packet is detected, the network adapter powers on or resumes the computer. The effective use of WoL allows system administrators or users to remotely power on computers for patch management, remote support, and remote access. WoL has the potential to significantly increase the use of power-saving modes and energy-efficient techniques.
