Do you think you should wait for an 85 from Sigma?
As Schaufuss has already said: The price for the 85 is very good, because optical quality is 1A. In addition, the lens is quite small and light and the AF is very fast/quiet. If something comes from Sigma, it will probably be F1.4, but that will be a bit heavier and also a bit more expensive.
Compact, light and sharp. And costs only a fraction of GM. Therefore certainly a good buy. But if it should be quite cheap, then maybe look at Viltrox Fx-85mm 1.8. Or if you need F/1.4, then Samyang AF 85mm F/1.4 FE. Personally I stick with the Sony FE85mm, just because I love AF/MF switch on lens and is lightest. :-)
I had the Sigma 85mm 1.4 on my Canon 5D Mark IV for a long time and then realised that I mostly shot at 1.8 or even 2.0 to 4.0, because the depth of field at 1.4 is simply extremely shallow. To exaggerate a bit, I would say that only the front part of the eyeball has been sharp....
Besides, the Sigma 85mm 1.4 is a huge lens. Not only in length but also in diameter.
I've had a few colleagues advise me on switching to Sony, and they all have the Sony 85mm 1.8 and don't want anything else.
At this price, I would go for Sony. I have this lens and am thrilled with the quality, even at F1.8. For portraits and other separation of the subject from the background, the 85 f1.8 is simply terrific.
