Why have a Thuderbolt 3 connection if the device doesn't support 40 Gbit per second? Then you can just stick with USB C, which costs a lot less! Completely superfluous!

40 Gbits/s = 5 GByte/s. That's not bad. Many computers have USB-C and Thunderbolt next to each other, the Thunderbolt port is labelled with this lightning bolt. If you accidentally plug the housing into the wrong port, you will only have USB 3.x speed instead of Thunderbolt.

Bit and byte are not the same.
8bit = 1byte
That is why it is also advertised as bit.
It sounds faster in advertising.
