Martina (Leni Deschner) lives in a high-rise district in Berlin. Her mother is a shift worker, so Martina has to help out after school and look after her little brother. One day, the gifted thirteen-year-old gets a chance to earn a scholarship to the coveted Johann Sigismund Gymnasium in the idyllic Alpine town of Kirchberg.
As soon as they arrive, the tough Jo (Lovena Börschmann Ziegler), boxer Matze (Morten Völlger) and little Uli (Wanja Valentin Kube) make one thing clear: the city kids at boarding school don’t mix with the rural town outsiders. In fact, they’re enemies – and have been for generations.
Even the adults can’t change this. Good-natured boarding school headmaster Justus Bökh (Tom Schilling) tries to please everybody, principal Kreuzkamm (Hannah Herzsprung) isn’t great at being strict either. And the mother of «outsider» leader Ruda (Franka Roche) and the mysterious non-smoker (Trystan Pütter), who leads a dropout life in a railroad car? She doesn’t even try to interfere.
Martina really just wants to learn and stay out of any trouble. But it’s not long before she’s caught in the middle, as the in-crowd is constantly clashing with the gruff Ruda and her clique. Although she absolutely must pass the exams to get the scholarship, Martina can’t let her new friends down either.
The plan to settle the eternal dispute with a joint play at the end of the year doesn’t work out. The chasm between the two groups is simply too deep. Things only change after a dramatic accident...
