AI boom: could SSDs and HDDs become the new graphics cards?
by Kevin Hofer

Hardware prices are currently extremely volatile. That’s why our prices are often updated on a daily basis. Keep reading to find out why that is.
If you’re planning to purchase hardware, you’ll soon realise that the costs you calculate today may be significantly higher tomorrow. Memory prices in particular are currently rising rapidly. This is why we can only guarantee many prices for that respective day.
Find out why prices are rising sharply – and how you can plan your purchase economically.
We’re currently in the midst of a huge AI boom. AI models are being trained with enormous amounts of data and require a lot of memory. Manufacturers are therefore increasing prices for HDDs, SSDs and RAM – and delivery times are also getting longer. If you want to learn more about this development and the forecasts in this field, my colleague Kevin Hofer has written two articles on the subject.
The current market situation is increasing our procurement costs, particularly for these products:
Sometimes prices can change within a few hours. This recently happened when a business customer asked us for ten business notebooks and we put together a quote for him at a certain price. Just 24 hours later, the situation had changed. The purchase prices for the installed storage components had risen significantly. This meant that the same package cost 400 francs more overnight.
A frustrating situation, both for him and us. After all, we want to offer you stable prices and reliable calculations. However, this is often not possible in the current market situation. If our suppliers increase their prices at short notice, we have to pass on these changes so that we can continue to offer our products.
We now know from first-hand experience that mulling over quotes will currently cost you money. In other words, if you’ve received a quote, it’s best to make a decision as quickly as possible. Just one day can make all the difference.
To make planning easier in the current situation, we recommend following these steps:
Plan any hardware rollouts for 2026 as early as possible and make your purchases in good time.
Be quick to purchase spare parts or upgrades before manufacturers raise their prices again.
When planning your budget, allow for a financial buffer for storage components. This way you’ll avoid having to cut corners on other items to cover the additional hardware costs.
If you would like to request a quote, you can do so with our quote tool for business customers. We’ll immediately send you an up-to-date price overview based on the currently available contingents.
Please note: all our quotes are non-binding. Prices and availability may change at short notice. In some cases, we have to turn down requests if the required quantities are no longer available or if our suppliers’ purchase prices have changed significantly.
Price increases affect us all, so let’s find a solution for your hardware procurement together. Our team in charge will be happy to send you a customised quote.
