We play "PUBG", (for me) the most nerve-wracking and best game of the decade

The digitec editorial team has chosen its favourite games of the decade. Simon and I are streaming one of them today. It's the mother of all battle royale games: "PUBG".

"PlayerUnknow's Battlegrounds", or "PUBG" for short, hit like a bomb in 2017. The game principle is simple: one aeroplane, 100 players, one island. Everyone jumps off unarmed and has to gather their equipment. A circle forms, outside of which you slowly die. The last one standing at the end wins. Then it's time: Winner winner chicken dinner.

"PUBG" is not, strictly speaking, the first game with the so-called battle royale game principle. A mod for the war simulation "Arma 2" and "Arma 3" came before it. The developer behind the game, Brendan Greene, better known by his gamertag PlayerUnknown, worked on it. In the end, however, it was the independent "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" that made the breakthrough and created a new genre. The most famous imitator is undoubtedly "Fortnite", which was released a few months after "PUBG".

In the meantime, the multiplayer shooter has become quieter. Nevertheless, the game is still hugely popular. The mobile spin-off in particular is a perennial favourite in Asia.

Together with Simon "Zero-Damage-Sigge" Balissat, I hunt for the coveted chicken dinner in our weekly Let's Play. Watch the video to find out whether we can scream out of frustration or joy.

We stream most Wednesdays on Youtube. You can also check out our Discord channel.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
