Range grows to 6.3 million products and counting

«Pretty much everything». In line with our slogan, the virtual shelves at Digitec and Galaxus are now stacked with 6.3 million products. This is particularly good news for computer geeks, gamers and DIY enthusiasts. These sectors have seen the strongest growth since late 2021.

1,244 vacuum cleaners, 4,812 drills, 2,374 computer monitors, 2,191 hairbrushes and 3,317 types of cat food – Digitec Galaxus offers an almost infinite range of products for everyday and not-so everyday use. And the range continues to grow at full speed. The last two years have seen Switzerland’s leading online retailer increase its virtual shopping shelves by over 79 per cent to 6.3 million products. Customers have viewed 3.8 million of them, or just over half the full range. However, only one in eight available products actually makes it all the way to a shopping cart at all.

The strongest absolute growth in the entire product range was recorded in Fashion + Sport. The product groups Accessories, Bags and Water Sports in particular saw above average growth. DIY has also stepped up its game. «Our product range has turned into a true paradise for DIY enthusiasts,» says Theresa Schieder, Head of Category Management Do-it-Yourself. «Take our bathroom and sanitary range, for example. We’ve invested heavily in this area and now have the right taps and shower heads to suit almost every need. An increasing number of craft businesses are now also buying from us because the range of hand and power tools is also outstanding in Switzerland.»
In percentage terms, the strongest growth has been recorded in DIY as well as Office Supplies and Gaming. These areas have seen the product range multiply in the last two years. The range of supermarket products is the only area that has shrunk somewhat. However, oat milk, pet food and gummy bears are also increasingly making their way into customers’ shopping carts.

New warehouse – new merchants

The considerable range growth, boosting it to 6.3 million products in total, is based on two developments. Firstly, the significant expansion of our warehouse capacities in Wohlen and Dintikon over the past two years. Warehouse space has increased by a quarter since 2021 and by more than half compared to 2019. This allows us to stock larger volumes of popular products including smartphone cases, diapers, network cables and shampoo. The over 700 merchants who offer their product ranges on Digitec and Galaxus also have a big impact. «Marketplace merchants such as Decathlon and Conrad are hugely important for range depth,» says Simon De Toffol, the man in charge of the merchant platform. «They also cover what’s called the long tail. Those are speciality and niche products we don’t stock ourselves, but are in demand with customers.»

Three products in, two out

The quality of our shop is at least as important as the range we offer. Keeping the existing product range up to date while expanding it at the same time is a Herculean task. Roughly 300,000 new products are added to the shops every month, while 200,000 listed products bite the dust and end up on sale. In other words, to increase the range by one million products each year, we need to add three million new products to the shops. The fact that the product data quality isn’t always perfect is something the Community keeps us on our toes about. That’s why we also invest lots of time, energy and brainpower into improving the quality of our product data. And yes, it’s a rocky road.
