Over 1,000 merchants now on Galaxus marketplace
Galaxus marketplace now plays host to over 1,000 merchants. Together, they offer over five million products. In total, shoppers can choose from a range totalling almost eight million products on Galaxus.
It’s hard to imagine a shopping centre with 1,000 stores, where customers can choose between almost eight million products. But this is the reality on Galaxus.
Now, as we’re entering the final stretch of 2024, Galaxus has welcomed Irniger Pflanzen & Deko – its thousandth merchant – to its marketplace. To be precise, the total number of merchants has since reached 1,027.
This over-one-thousand-strong group of marketplace merchants sells roughly 5.1 million products. Sales contracts are concluded between the merchant and the end customer, with the merchant also having full control over pricing. Galaxus acts as an intermediary, essentially playing the role of a shop window. In addition, Galaxus’s customer service team helps out with warranty claims, complaints and other issues. The company also handles returns for customers and partners. Not only that, but Galaxus also takes care of customs clearance for its EU-based marketplace merchants on request.
Unlike many of its international competitors, Galaxus’s marketplace is selective. Simon De Toffol, Business Engineer at Galaxus, explains: «We decide on a case-by-case basis whether a merchant and its product range is a good fit for us. That way, we prevent Galaxus from turning into a junkyard sale.»
Galaxus itself sells 4.1 million different products. However, that doesn’t mean competition from the marketplace is off the table. Around a fifth of our product range overlaps with those for sale on the marketplace. In total, there are now almost eight million products available on Galaxus.
The seller has no influence on whether or not customers see the product on offer. The deciding factor is, in fact, the quality of the offering, explains Simon: «Marketplace merchants and Galaxus are on an equal footing. You can’t buy your way up the search rankings on our site. With this in mind, it’s perfectly possible for a Galaxus offering not to be displayed because the price or availability isn’t great.»
Quantity demands quality
But having an online shop with millions upon millions of products isn’t enough. Simon explains: «Having access to relevant information about each product is just as important to our customers as variety. That’s why we’ll be investing even more resources in improving our product data in the future.»
The Galaxus website currently lists 90 million product specifications, ranging from colour to material type to country of origin to screen size. This works out at about eleven specs per product. Twelve months ago, it was 7.5 per product.
When you’re working with this volume of data, errors can’t be avoided entirely. It’s also why Galaxus Community members can update incorrect or missing product data themselves. Seems to be going down well.
