As announced, "PUBG Battlegrounds" will become free-to-play starting today. Existing owners will receive the new paid "Battleground Plus" mode for free.
The game that made the Battle Royale genre popular is going free-to-play. Four years after its launch, "PUBG" is now on a par with competitors like "Apex Legends" and "Warzone".
Everyone who has already purchased the game will automatically get access to the new "Battleground Plus" mode. This would otherwise cost $12.99 and offers Ranked and Custom matches, an experience point boost, 1300 in-game currency, and a few clothing items. Original buyers can also look forward to an additional outfit.
"PlayerUnknows Battlegrounds", or "PUBG" for short, has been renamed "PUBG: Battlegrounds" in the meantime. Along with the free-to-play change, new features were also introduced. These include a new reconnaissance drone as well as a healing device that has to be equipped in a weapon slot. Two new tutorial modes are also available to choose from.
The switch to a free-to-play model was announced by PUBG Corp. back in December at the Game Awards. Three free content updates will also follow between January 26 and February 9 to celebrate.
As a child, I wasn't allowed to have any consoles. It was only with the arrival of the family's 486 PC that the magical world of gaming opened up to me. Today, I'm overcompensating accordingly. Only a lack of time and money prevents me from trying out every game there is and decorating my shelf with rare retro consoles.
