Oops: Samsung reveals its new wearables in its own app

Manufacturers showing off their products before launch is nothing new. But Samsung showing off brand new wearables in its own app is.

For the past few weeks, leaks from the house of Samsung have been coming our way. First the S10, then the foldable and now, five days before the Galaxy Unpacked event, three new gadgets appear on Samsung's Wearables app.

This latest update to the Galaxy Wearables app will be remembered for longer than usual. With the update, new earbuds, a new watch and two new trackers are introduced.

The SamCentralTech Twitter account posted the update overnight last night. SamCentral is the Twitter account for SamCentral Discord, a server community that provides various software and updates online.

If you open the latest version of the Samsung Gear app now, you'll see the three not-yet-officially-introduced new wearables at the top of the page. Samsung has not yet removed the new wearables (status 15 February, 14:00).

For the new gadgets, you have a choice.

What is Samsung showing us?

With the update, these three new wearables have appeared in the app:

  1. The Galaxy Watch Active
  2. Two activity trackers: Galaxy Fit and Fit e
  3. The Galaxy Buds

According to the app, the new watch will be 40 millimetres in diameter. The letter e behind the activity tracker could be a clue to a cheaper version. The Buds earbuds that were already seen a fortnight ago with the Galaxy S10 look like the predecessors, the Gear IconX - except for the new colour.

Samsung's Unpacked event will take place on February 20. I'm guessing there won't be any more big surprises. Or will there?

The leak as publicity?

More and more manufacturers are leaking information about new products. Ever since the prototype of the iPhone 4 was forgotten in a bar, leak hunting has become a popular sport on the internet. The case of the Pixel 3 was amusing enough: full reviews had already been written before launch. It's hard to know whether Samsung experts loaded the new wearables into the app on purpose or not.

The point is: manufacturers get a lot of media attention with leaks. We humans are curious. And what arouses our curiosity more than supposedly confidential information? Leaks generate more contributions than a one-off product presentation. And companies don't really suffer any major inconvenience.

However, loading new gadgets into your own app too soon is still special. Whatever. We'll know more on February 20.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
