Now available for pre-order: "Yoshi and the Mysterious Book" for the Switch 2
Yoshi experiences a new adventure on the Switch 2. "Yoshi and the Mysterious Book" combines classic Yoshi skills with observation, creature research and eye-catching stop-motion visuals.
Yoshi games were rarely the loudest Nintendo titles. Their appeal lies in exploration. Yoshi jumps through colourful backdrops, swallows enemies, turns them into eggs and throws them at hidden targets. He searches for flowers, collects coins and scratches every corner for secrets. The games reward you not just for getting there, but for exploring. Compared to other series, they have a deliberately slower pace than Sonic, less of an open world than Zelda, less strictly timed jump passages than some Mario levels. Yoshi thrives on searching, trying and discovering.
This is exactly where «Yoshi and the Mysterious Book» comes in. The game for the Switch 2 takes the familiar Yoshi formula and focuses more on observation. You're not just supposed to overcome platforms. You're supposed to examine creatures, understand their behaviour and derive new paths from it. This is fitting for a series that has always been softer, more inquisitive and less hectic than many other Nintendo platformers.
The graphic style differs significantly from previous Yoshi games. Instead of a tinkered look, Nintendo has opted for a stop-motion aesthetic with deliberately slightly jerky animations.

A book as a game world
The starting point is Yoshi's island. A talking book called Enzo (originally Mr E) lands there. It has forgotten which creatures live in its own pages. Yoshi jumps into these pages and helps to recapture the inhabitants. Nintendo describes the game world as a series of individual habitats within book chapters where you investigate creatures and document their characteristics.
This sounds like a classic family adventure. At its core, however, the focus is on interaction. You observe creatures, carry them around, throw them, have Yoshi swallow them or turn them into eggs. Then you check what happens. Some reactions open up new clues. Others help you to catch up on later or earlier discoveries.
The common thread is clear: you don't just complete levels. You work your way through chapters of a book. Each habitat has a central discovery that drives progress. You also unlock further content through additional observations and discoveries. However, the area is not necessarily complete after that. Clues can lead you to further observations.
Known Yoshi movements and opponents
Yoshi retains key abilities. He jumps, flutters briefly in the air, performs a stomp attack, uses his tongue and throws eggs. The actions themselves are familiar. What is new is their purpose in the described game structure. The actions are not just for fighting or collecting. They are tools to trigger behaviour.
An example: Yoshi swallows a creature and turns it into an egg. He can throw this egg at other creatures or objects. Or he can move his tail to place a creature on his back and carry it with him to use it later. Even simple actions can trigger reactions.
The game is not entirely without familiar opponents. Bowser Jr. and Kamek appear in the habitats. According to Nintendo, they are looking for something in Enzo and cause trouble there.
The game will be released on 21 May. You can pre-order it from us now for Nintendo Switch 2.
