The yellow special edition of the Atari 2600+ combines nostalgic design with contemporary features. The console aims to bring back the original gaming experience and relies on HDMI output and a wireless joystick.
Video game history can be relived today in many forms: with an emulator, a mini console or in a digital remake. The Atari 2600+ in the «Pac-Man» edition takes a different approach. It brings back the original hardware experience, but with contemporary technology. The console is now available for pre-order and will be delivered from 31 October.
The case of the«Pac-Man» edition is completely yellow. The front features stylised «Pac-Man» graphics that are reminiscent of the arcade model. This clearly distinguishes the edition from the standard version with a wooden look. The scope of delivery includes the wireless CX-40+ wireless joystick in «Pac-Man» design and a cartridge with «Pac-Man»: Double Feature 2-in-1. It contains two versions of the classic: the 2600 version and a modernised 7800 version.
The console is around 80 per cent the size of the original and is powered via USB-C. The wireless joystick «CX-40+» connects via a 2.4 GHz dongle, which, according to the manufacturer, means that inputs are almost instantaneous.
The HDMI output supports widescreen mode, which means it works directly with current televisions. The HDMI output is in 720p, which should ensure an authentic retro look without distorting the pixelated graphics. The cartridge socket supports games from the 2600 and 7800 generation.
An updated hardware platform works inside, which authentically reproduces the original modules. The aim is not the technical development of the games, but their unadulterated display with stable image output and precise input behaviour.
The Atari 2600+ in the «Pac-Man» edition is compatible with most original cartridges and accessories from the systems of the time. If they fit mechanically, you can use old joysticks or paddle controllers. This makes the device suitable for both the practical use of existing collections and for getting started with physical retro hardware. However, there is no integrated games library or digital store access.
