Stephanie Tresch and Dominik Bärlocher are in Paris. To help them on their way they have a wide variety of smartphones. Particularly ones that heavily promote the power of their cameras. This calls for a massive contest of quality.
Huawei’s P30 should be the clear winner here. Their new flagship device is supposedly so impressive that Huawei’s Swiss marketing department quickly organised a little trip for members of the press. According to their marketing blurb, we would become «convinced by its camera quality» or whatever.
This idea sounded so good to video producer Stephanie Tresch and I that we thought to ourselves: «Why just test one camera?»
By sheer coincidence we also have some other interesting phones in our office on top of these camera-promoting devices. Devices like the Cat S61, pretty much the opposite of everything these flagship models want to represent. Followed by the Wiko View 2, a device by a brand that usually likes to punch high above its weight class. A reference picture will be taken with Stephanie’s Sony a7iii, which has a 24-70mm lens.
One thing to note before we start: This isn’t a test under lab conditions. We’re working with natural light that can change from minute to minute. And what about the weather? That too. This doesn’t leave a lot of time for staging or perfectionism. We shot using a tripod. One shot and that was it. Just like in real life. All pictures are displayed as they were taken, but reduced them all to one uniform width as our Content Management System would hate us otherwise. You’ll find a download-link to all included pictures at the end of this article.
