New Intel notebook processors: Alder Lake-HX brings up to 16 cores and 24 threads
Intel has new notebook processors in its range. Alder Lake-HX is a CPU with a power consumption of 55 watts and 16 cores. They are primarily intended for thicker devices or gaming notebooks.
Intel introduces Alder Lake-HX, a new chip primarily for gaming notebooks. The processors will be soldered directly onto the motherboard and will probably appear in more than ten laptops by the end of the year. The new processor class brings a total of seven models with 8 to 16 cores. There are two Core i5s with 8 and 12 cores and three Core i7s with once 14 and twice 16 cores. The new top performance comes from two Core i9s with 16 cores.

The leaders of the new HX series are the Core i9-12900HX and the overclockable i9-12950HX. They have 16 CPU cores and 24 threads - eight of which are performance cores and another eight efficiency cores. The P-cores are capable of Hyperthreading, which leads to a total of 24 threads. The power consumption (Thermal Design Power - TDP) is 55 watts, but can reach 157 watts in Turbo. It was still 45 watts with the base TDP in Alder Lake-H. The P-cores of the new i9 run with a base clock of 2.3 GHz, the E-cores with 1.7 GHz. A maximum of 5 GHz and 3.6 GHz is achieved in Boost.

The HX CPUs have support for PCI Express 5.0 and support up to 128 gigabytes of DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200 RAM.
Lenovo was the first manufacturer to officially announce a Legion 7i today, which will offer a choice of an Intel Core i9-12900HX or an i7-12800HX paired with Nvidia's Geforce RTX 3070 TI or 3080 TI. More gaming laptops will probably follow soon, since Asia's largest IT trade show, Computex, starts in Taiwan on May 24.
