"Just Watch is a useful app: it shows you which films and series are being shown where, in what quality and for how much. I've tested it for you.
Does this situation remind you of déjà vu?
I admit it; calling this search a tedious problem is a bit of an exaggeration. There are more serious ones in life, I know. But if I told you there was an app that would do this search for you, you'd still be taken, wouldn't you?
The thing gets up and running quickly:
By default, the app shows you what's popular with Just-Watch users on your favourite services. You can switch between new content, discounted offers and your personal 'watchlist' with a swipe.
The search function is even more interesting. It lets you search for the film or series of your choice. The app not only shows you where the offer is available, but also in what definition and at what price. You get the results independently of the services you have chosen as your 'suppliers'. If you click on the corresponding icon, for example Netflix, the app in question opens if it's installed on your smartphone. Nice!
As far as I know, Just Watch never suggests a service that isn't available in your country. Like when you search for "Game of Thrones" for example. Depending on the app, the series is broadcast on Swisscom TV or via Sky. HBO is not shown as a service, as it is not available in Switzerland.
Very useful: Just Watch has a filter function that lets you choose genre and popularity. The app draws on data from the online database IMDb.com and Rotten Tomatoes, a website that collects and compares public and expert reviews.
All in all, Just Watch makes your life easier as a film and series fan. Maybe you even know of another similar app that has even more features. If so, leave me a comment.
By the way: 'It' was unsettling. P***. I would have been better off watching Snow Queen.
I write about technology as if it were cinema, and about films as if they were real life. Between bits and blockbusters, I’m after stories that move people, not just generate clicks. And yes – sometimes I listen to film scores louder than I probably should.
I want to watch "This". I've never seen the horror film before. My friends are already urging me to come and see the second instalment at the cinema. So I look at the video-on-demand offer on my Swisscom TV subscription. 19.90 francs. Far too expensive. Maybe I can rent it on Google Play. There it's CHF 4.50. That's when Netflix comes to mind. Their film offer is very limited in Switzerland, but maybe I'll be lucky. Indeed, "It" is in and I'm delighted.
Just Watch, the search app of my choice, is simple: it searches the databases of legal streaming services and VoD providers. The app prepares the search for you in such a way that you can browse everything very easily. So you can find out where your favourite programme or film is in no time at all. The app itself is free and available in the Google Play Store as well as the Apple App Store.
