With the Fitbit Edge, Google is introducing a fitness tracker with GPS and automatic workout detection. It monitors various health metrics and, according to the manufacturer, lasts up to seven days.
With the Fitbit Edge, Google continues its Charge series of fitness trackers. Compared to the 2023 Charge 6, the manufacturer has revised the display, GPS technology, and the casing, among other features.
Larger display and automatic workout detection
The Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch AMOLED display. According to Google, the screen area is 46 percent larger than on previous Fitbit trackers. An always-on mode displays information continuously. A side button allows you to pause your workout, among other functions.
The aluminum casing is 11.58 millimeters thick. Without the strap, the tracker weighs 17.7 grams. Google offers it in four color variants: Black, Silver, Olive, and Gold. The straps are interchangeable.
You can choose from more than 40 sports modes, including running, cycling, and various fitness exercises. During your workout, the display shows data such as your heart rate, pace, and distance covered.
Automatic detection is also designed to track and categorize up to 100 different activities. The integrated GPS records running and cycling routes even without a connected smartphone. An altimeter measures elevation changes.
Health monitoring and AI coach
In addition to sports activities, the Fitbit Edge tracks various health metrics, including heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, and skin temperature changes. At night, it records your sleep stages and evaluates your sleep quality.
Using the ECG function, you can check your heart rhythm and detect potential signs of atrial fibrillation. The tracker will alert you if your heart rate is unusually high or low.
An AI-powered health coach analyzes the collected data and provides tips on training and recovery, including personalized training plans. You need a paid Google Health Premium subscription for the full range of features.
In daily use, the Fitbit Edge displays smartphone notifications. You can also control music playback and use Google Maps for navigation. Unlike its predecessor, the Charge 6, it lacks the ability to make contactless payments.
Replaceable battery with up to seven days of runtime
Google states the battery life is up to seven days. With the display permanently on, this drops to up to two days according to the manufacturer. A full charge takes about 90 minutes. Five minutes of charging is said to be enough for another day. If the battery wears out, you can replace it without having to replace the entire tracker.
The casing is IP68-rated for protection against dust and water and can withstand water pressure of 5 ATM, according to the manufacturer.
The Fitbit Edge works with smartphones running Android 11 and iOS 16.4 or later. You also need a Google account and the Google Health app.
