Explosive power supplies: manufacturer blames reviewer

YouTubers have shown that two power supply models by Gigabyte can explode. While the manufacturer is now offering customers replacements, Gigabyte blames Gamers Nexus' testing method for the broken power supplies.

The story of the exploding power supplies by Gigabyte with the designations GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM continues. After YouTubers Gamers Nexus revealed that the PSUs are already broken at the time of purchase or break within a short period of time, manufacturer Gigabyte has now spoken out. Their point of view? Gamers Nexus is responsible for the defects, as they don’t use the power supplies properly.

What happened?

Gamers Nexus isn’t the first YouTube channel to point out the unsafe power supplies. Hardware Busters already reported about the GP-P750GM's explosive nature last year.

In a large-scale review, Gamers Nexus bought and tested several GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM power supplies in the past months. What did they find? 50 percent of the GP-P750GM either arrive defective or break within a short time. They may even explode and destroy the rest of the PC hardware. The failure rate of the GP-P850GM isn’t quite as high, but still too high for a PC component produced by a renowned manufacturer.

In the case statement, Gigabyte now writes that the power supplies can break when the maximum power load is too high for a longer time. The problem with this statement is that Gamers Nexus didn’t exceed the wattage the unit was designed to operate within in their tests – and if they did, it was only for a short time. Nevertheless, too many of the power supplies failed. At least Gigabyte is now offering affected customers a replacement.

Digitec Galaxus offers the affected power supplies. However, due to these reports, they’re not available for order for the time being.
