Does Dyson make an air purifying headset?
At Dyson, headphones now not only provide music, but also fresh air: the manufacturer has filed a patent for headphones that are also portable air purifiers.
After Dyson scrapped its plans for an electric car in the autumn, the British manufacturer is now coming up with something completely different: headphones with an integrated air purifier. The British patent authority recently published the patent for this, and Dyson filed the application in July 2019.
The air purifiers, each consisting of an impeller and a filter, are designed to sit in both ear cups and play music simultaneously, according to the patent. A strap that directs the airflow out of the auricles sits across the mouth and nose and is intended to supply the wearer with fresh air. If you don't need clean air at the moment, you can also fold the strap away.
Dyson normally manufactures stationary air purifiers. Clean air is now also available to take away with this gadget - Dyson is probably targeting large cities in particular.
Even with active noise cancelling
The patent shows that Dyson even wants to equip the device with active noise cancelling. Because the air purification mechanisms are probably relatively loud, this will be necessary anyway in order to be able to listen to music at all. This is because Dyson's patent application states that there are motors in the ear cups that rotate at around 12,000 revolutions per minute to draw in around 1.4 litres of air per second - for comparison: a standard PC fan normally has around 1500 revolutions per minute.
It is not clear from the patent whether the people around an air purification headset wearer are also insulated from the noise.
It is also unclear whether the model will ever come onto the market. This is because Dyson has been working on its portable air purifier for some time, as a Bloomberg report from 2018 points out. So far, however, the patents are the only thing the company has to show for itself.
