digitec plays World Cup special: "Mario Smash Football" - No referee dares to take the field

For all those who find "Fifa" too complicated and offers too little action, there is "Mario Smash Football". We forget all football tactics and instead throw turtle shells and barriers around our ears. You can watch us live at around 11am.

The World Cup will soon be over and with it our World Cup special. For the fourth and final edition, we're taking a really arcadey approach. In "Mario Smash Football", I (hopefully) show our "Fifa"-addled colleague Raphael Knecht where Mario goes for the turbo.

"Mario Smash Football" was released in 2005 for the Nintendo Gamecube and is a mixture of "Smash Bros" and football. The game is played five against five. You won't find a referee. He would also be hopelessly out of his depth with the chaos that reigns on the pitch. You don't need to pull the emergency brake if your opponent is storming towards your goal alone. You can legitimately chase after him with a red turtle shell or, even better, tactically place a row of bananas beforehand. Of course, there are also super shots and numerous special attacks to ensure that even the last one loses track in the wild turmoil.

We make use of the Dolphin emulator because it is (theoretically) easier than dusting off the Gamecube and connecting it to the PC. We actually wanted to game the Wii version, but unfortunately that didn't work out for technical reasons, which is why the teaser image is still from the new version ;)

The game is played on this part.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
