The shots were intense and so were the emotions. At last Saturday's digitec Playground, professional and amateur gamers competed in a battle to become «Rocket League» champions.

Almost 1,000 gamers took part in the fourth edition of digitec Playground, making it the biggest «Rocket League» tournament in Switzerland. Like last time, there was a fun tournament and a pro tournament. We kicked the event off with the fun tournament.

Winner fun tournament

Of the 35 or so teams, Cpt Crunch CH, Picnici and PoolPartyArtyBoy from Team Edgar Ed and Nidoxen, Hausi and Psydetrix from Team Quantum Rocketeers reached the finals. Quantum Rocketeers won the decisive game 2-0 and took home the fun tournament trophy.

Winner pro tournament

To reach the final of the pro tournament, the teams had to compete in qualifiers. The qualifiers were full of surprises: underdog Jacques Ouzi beat the favourite mYinsanity. For the finals, they changed their name to Aesra's Vikings. The following four teams reached the final:

  • Aesra's Vikings with Mihno, Arcko and Avyiest
  • Irie Legacy with Pipifax, iRivelA and Frosty
  • Edelweiss Esports with Zaphare, Mirror and POLAR
  • Slightly Salty with Thimoinho, Seless and jujuju

In the first semifinal, Irie Legacy lost to Aesra's Vikings pretty clearly with 0-3. In the second semi-final, Edelweiss Esports faced Slightly Salty. The former have already proven that they’re not to be underestimated when they played against Simon, Luca and myself a few weeks ago. Slightly Salty was a lot more skilful than we were. It was a close battle, with Edelweiss Esports winning 3-2 and qualifying for the final of digitec Playground.

In the game for 3rd and 4th place, Irie Legacy beat Slightly Salty 3-1.

The final wasn’t close at all: Edelweiss Esports overpowered the newcomers Aesra's Vikings. With a final score of 4-0, the team with captain Zaphare secured the tournament victory.

Final: Edelweiss Esports vs. Aesra's Vikings 4-0

Congratulations to all participants and especially, of course, to the winners!

As a child, I wasn't allowed to have any consoles. It was only with the arrival of the family's 486 PC that the magical world of gaming opened up to me. Today, I'm overcompensating accordingly. Only a lack of time and money prevents me from trying out every game there is and decorating my shelf with rare retro consoles.
