Desk lamp or design piece? Both!

I actually thought I was just looking at an office lamp. But I’ve realised, the Swiss design Lumino Desk is so much more. And all thanks to its clever design.

Desk lamps don’t sound like the most exciting topic at first. But Ofinto’s Lumino Desk surprised me. A sleek look, simple operation and a light that doesn’t blind you – sounds promising, doesn’t it? So I asked the Swiss brand, which is based in Gossau and has a showroom in Zurich, for a sample and tested it for several weeks.

The lamp’s 51 cm tall and the extended lamp head reaches a length of 49 cm at 105 degrees. The space-saving base has a diameter of 15 cm and is equipped with rubber dampers that protect the desk surface and ensure a secure hold – ideal for keeping your surface tidy.

Compared to a similar model I tested, Ledvance’s Sun@Home Office Light, the Lumino Desk appears lighter and more discreet. Forget frills or symbols, the Ledvance lamp with its solid base plate and larger lamp head is more eye-catching.

If your desk surface is already pushed to its max, there’s a practical alternative: a desk clamp, which is also 15 cm tall and creates even more space.

Lighting: for concentrating

With a brightness of 530 lumens, the Lumino Desk provides sufficient light for most work spaces. Thanks to the three selectable light colours – warm (3000K), neutral white (4000K) and almost daylight white (5000K) – as well as the infinitely variable dimming function, you can choose the perfect lighting for your needs and the time of day.

What’s impressive is the high colour rendering index (CRI) of the LEDs of over 90, which ensures a natural and vivid display of colours. This makes this model suitable for architects, for example, who draw plans. With 600 lumens and a CRI of 95, the Sun@Home Office Light provides an even better quality of light that perfectly imitates natural daylight. However, that light’s more concentrated on the area directly below.

One detail I particularly like is that when dimming the Lumino Desk, you can reduce the brightness to the minimum without it dimming up again immediately afterwards. This wasn’t the case for the Ledvance – I always had to be careful not to miss the brightest spot. Everything about this lamp feels effortless, even though there’s only one button.

The flexible luminaire head is the real highlight because you can direct the light exactly where you need it. That’s why this design works well on desks, but also in living rooms or hallways.

If you’re looking for a variety of functions with app control, timers or smart home features, the Lumino Desk may not be your thing. But sometimes all you need is a lamp that does what it’s supposed to – and Ofinto’s model does exactly that.

Quality comes with a price

The Lumino Desk costs around 199 francs and if you include a table clamp it’s 228 – no bargain, of course. So why’s the price so much higher when compared to cheaper models like the Xiaomi Mi LED Desk Lamp? Before someone comes up with the classic «You can get the same thing cheaper!» in the comments, I want to provide some explanation.

So, who better to ask than the brand itself, Ofinto. Sandro Mörgenthaler, Head of Growth, gave me a deeper insight into the product. The main difference lies in the choice of materials, craft and technology.

The Lumino Desk has a high-quality aluminium casing and a stable base. In cheaper models, such as the Xiaomi lamp, plastic is often used. Lumino Desk’s base consists of a one-centimetre thick metal plate, which is triple-polished and finished with a matt powder coating. In addition to a classy aesthetic, this ensures longevity and better recyclability.

The Lumino Desk is also in a different league technically. With an energy efficiency of 130 lumens per watt, it’s 16 per cent more efficient than the Xiaomi lamp. The LEDs last over 50,000 hours. They also offer stepless dimming and three colour temperature levels. Another clever detail is the automatic shut-off function, which saves energy and makes operation super easy.

What suggests even higher quality is that Ofinto provides a 5-year guarantee on the Lumino Desk. This is a clear advantage over cheaper alternatives, which often offer no guarantee or only a very short one. According to Mörgenthaler, Ofinto is transparent in its pricing policy. It focuses on quality and sustainability, unlike the short-term bargains from many other manufacturers.

The Lumino Desk is ideal if you’re looking for a stylish and functional lamp for your workspace. The minimalist design combined with a glare-free light and intuitive touch control is simply genius. With the lamp head slightly bent down, its look remains so neutral that it can also be used as an indirect light source in any room.
