The handy professional video camera is now available with a larger sensor and all the associated advantages. It utilises the connection for Canon lenses.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is a relatively handy and affordable professional-level video cam. Our Video Producer tested the 4K model in a real-life project.

Now Blackmagic has announced another model with the name suffix "6K" . However, the most important change is not the higher resolution of 6144×3456 pixels (compared to 4096×2160 pixels for the 4K), but the larger sensor. The 4K uses the Micro Four Thirds format, while the 6K uses Super 35 mm. This is similar in size to APS-C, but in 16:9 format instead of 3:2. The new sensor size means that SLR lenses from Canon can be attached (EF mount).

The larger sensor makes the camera more sensitive to light and can be used up to 25,600 ISO. In addition, video producers will be able to work better with depth of field.

Some other features:

  • 13 f-stops of dynamic range
  • 50 fps at full resolution, 60 fps at 6144×2560 (2.4:1 format) and 120 fps at 2.8K
  • Screen size 5 inch
  • Professional recording formats: 10 bit Apple ProRes in all formats up to 4K or 12 bit Blackmagic RAW up to 6K
  • Mini XLR input with 48 volt phantom power
  • External recording and charging via USB-C
  • Full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio included

Availability

According to Blackmagic, the camera is available immediately, but availability is still short, even for the 4K version. First come, first served. Incidentally, the significantly cheaper 4K is still available.

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
