"Battlefield 6" from the perspective of a "Call of Duty" player

For the first time in my gaming career, I ventured into a "Battlefield" game. Although I had fun, in the long term I will be switching back to my true love: "Call of Duty".

Dear «Battlefield 6»

Before you, I had never played a «Battlefield» game. Up until now, I've satisfied my shooter cravings monogamously with «Call of Duty». But you made me curious and showed me a new world. A world full of vehicles, chaos and destruction. I finally understand why you have so many fanatical followers as a game series. I would like to thank you for that.

Unfortunately, I still don't see a long-term future with you. It's down to me, not you. After our brief but intense affair, I have to return to my true love: «Call of Duty».

You want to know why? I want to tell you. But first I want to tell you what fascinated me so much about you.

What I like about you ♥️

You are a playful force to be reckoned with. I've never experienced such epic and chaotic battles in a «Call of Duty», which relies on smaller maps. During our two-week affair, you gave me so many awesome moments on your battlefields that I would have loved to share with someone immediately.

Do you remember the time I jumped out of a crashing helicopter and shot an enemy in the head on landing? And all that while the helicopter crashed and exploded on the ground a few metres away from me. Absolute cinema!

Or, do you remember that incredibly epic tank battle? I manoeuvred a tank and had a nerve-wracking battle against an enemy tank. I only survived because my hard-working pioneer team members were constantly repairing my war machine.

As a «Call of Duty» player, teamwork like this is alien to me. There, everyone runs around selfishly to get as many kills as possible. You have strangers working together. Fascinating. And somehow heart-warming.

Speaking of pioneers - I love your class system. The four jobs on the battlefield - assault, pioneer, supply and recon - provide a lot of playful variety. I mostly played in the role of supply. Saving lives on the battlefield was just as much fun as taking lives. And it allowed me to score points as a noob without being the ultimate killing machine with a 3.0 kill-to-death ratio.

I felt helpful even when I was playing like shit. You were so nice to me.

I was also mesmerised by your destructiveness. The fact that I can bring down entire buildings with rockets and grenades just feels magical to my «Call of Duty» brain. Destruction is fun. And nobody makes destruction look as epic as you do.

So you see, I enjoyed our time together. And I'm not just saying that because I got you for free from EA to test you out. Unfortunately, you also have a side to you that annoyed me.

Maybe you should sit down for the next section. I don't want to have to revive you.

What annoys me about you 💔

As much as I love your epic battles with dozens of players on huge maps - they're exhausting. It almost feels like a marriage vow to start a match knowing I'm going to blast through the next 40 minutes without a break.

I'm also no longer 20. My stamina has limits. Sometimes I just fancy a short, crisp quickie. Unlike «Call of Duty», you can't offer me that. Yes, I know, you also have shorter, classic shooter game modes like «King of the Hill» or «Team Deathmatch». But honestly, you're not good at it.

Every time I've played these more compact modes, I've wished I could play «Call of Duty». Your strengths are not in the small, but in the big.

Sometimes I also get the feeling that you think you're something better. You present yourself as a prestigious art project that is supposed to offer players an authentic war experience. Yet you're just as much gaming fast food as «Call of Duty». After a match, I am showered with countless score counters and unlocked items. Numbers rise, it rattles, it rings. I feel like I've won three slot machines in the casino at the same time. Be honest with yourself.

The thing that bothered me the most were your controls. You just don't move as gracefully as «Call of Duty» with its «omnimovement». And you're primarily a PC game, I realise that straight away. As a console gamer, I feel at a disadvantage. I've tried to understand you, to calibrate you - but we haven't found each other. I aim with the sticks as if I've drunk five grains, even with Aim Assist.

I'm also missing options for proper gyro control. In your settings you have hidden a few options for motion control, but they don't work properly. Thanks for nothing.

Don't believe me that motion control is important in shooters? Then read this article, dear «Battlefield 6»:

I can already hear the RGB keyboards of the PC Master Race disciples rattling in the comments: «It's your own fault, you don't play shooters on a console.» Yes, you do. And I do. Just like millions of other «Battlefield» fans. And these millions of fans should be offered decent control options. Full stop.

«Call of Duty» lets me customise the gyro controls down to the smallest detail. I can easily distribute headshots with the additional precision, even when sliding or piking. Why can't you offer me the same, «Battlefield 6»?

I hope you'll be happy with others - because you're boring on your own

I have to say a few words about your single-player mode. It really disappointed me. In your dating profile - sorry, your trailers - you promised me much more than you actually delivered. Visually, you fall short of expectations with muddy textures and strange animations. Unfortunately, you are miles away from a highly polished «Call of Duty» campaign.

Your storytelling skills are also limited. I have to admit, I often didn't listen to you. While you were talking in cutscenes, my mind wandered off and I was thinking about «Call of Duty». I'm sorry.

The action in your solo campaign can't keep up with the multiplayer either. You can't come close to replicating the chaos that comes from playing with other players. I miss highlights that I will remember, like the special moments in multiplayer.

In short: You're just bloody boring in single player.

Back to «Call of Duty» happiness

I hope these lines didn't hit you too hard. You're not a bad game, not at all. I enjoyed trying out something new for a change. But after the initial fascination with the new experience has worn off, I have to listen to my heart. And that clearly says: «Call of Duty».

I have to admit that during our affair, I occasionally cheated with my true shooter love (can you cheat during an affair?). The upcoming «Black Ops 7» had a beta event, which I tested after our gaming sessions together with a Monster Energy drink in my hand. Sorry I'm only mentioning this now.

This beta event confirmed to me once again that my heart beats for «Call of Duty» and not for you. Yes, «Black Ops 7» looks absolutely colourful, silly and «over the top». And I love it.

Short, addictive matches, exaggeratedly fast controls with walljumps, absurd gadgets and crazy weapons. The reward centre in my monkey brain is running at full speed. Compared to you, «Call of Duty» is not ashamed to be fast food. It's honest with me and gives me what I want.

Finally, dear «Battlefield 6»: I don't want to draw a final line with you. Maybe I'll soon be itching for another epic 40-minute battle. And who knows, maybe «Call of Duty: Black Ops 7» will still be a total failure - there's always a chance.

That's why I'm keeping you installed on my PS5 for now, even if my heart will never fully beat for you.

P.S: Please don't tell «Call of Duty» about our affair.

«Battlefield 6» is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PS5 version was provided to me by EA. You can read a detailed test by «Battlefield» expert Phil here:
