Again: Swiss company builds AirPods Pro with USB-C

After the iPhone, it's the AirPods' turn. The Swiss Ken Pillonel once again equips an Apple device with USB-C. This time it's a headphone case.
Ken Pillonel obviously couldn't wait for Apple to equip the AirPods Pro with a USB-C port. That's why the now freelance hardware prototyping consultant simply modified the charging case himself.
The former robotics student at EPFL Lausanne explains how he swapped the charging port in the video:
Because his AirPods case had initially broken, he began to open it and modify it. Later, the video shows the process of Pillonel replacing the charging port. In the end, he even manages to get the LED charging indicator to light up in the right colours.
Because of the USB-C requirement, Apple will soon have to do without the Lightning connector anyway. If you still want AirPods with USB-C: Pillonel sells the first-generation AirPods with USB-C in its shop. And if you want to try it yourself: the instructions are open source.
The first iPhone X with USB-C is also available thanks to the French-speaking Swiss. In the video, the hobbyist also announces that the AirPods are not the last device he will be converting - so we can look forward to it.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
