Hoi - 5.1 sets - if you have enough space and the possibility, you can set them up as follows:
Left front and right front: in the stereo triangle with you as the centre (sweet spot) - centre - directly in front of you the centre speaker at the same height as the left-right speaker - rear left and right both at the same height as the front and again in the stereo triangle vice versa.
Bass does not play such a role.  That would be optimal.
So:
                      Woofer
Front left centre Front right
          
                           DU

Rear Left Rear Right

Yes, it can make a real difference whether you are at the same height and the same distance away, it just depends on your perception, the speakers and your requirements....
