Would you still recommend the 6700k or would it be better to switch to the 7700k? I have read in various reviews that the 7700k is much hotter and more inefficient.

you can already buy the 6700k, it's the same chip as the 7700k, just overclocked, if you don't need 4k netflix and can do without the rest of the new features.
