I think so, it just needs an M2 socket. For cloning, I would simply create an image of the existing installation on an external hard drive/USB stick, e.g. with Macrium Reflect. With Macrium Reflect you can also create an emergency USB/CD, which you can then use to boot the Lenovo and transfer the image to the new SSD.

According to Lenovo, the Thinkpad X1 Carbon has an M.2 interface. For cloning I recommend Acronis
