Why is there such a distinction between the EU and the rest of the world: "Lifetime Maps (Europe), Lifetime World Maps"? Can I download the maps of e.g. Canada and Australia with this device without any problems?

Yes, the device connects to the WLAN at home and makes updates. If you like road trips, this is very valuable and especially in the USA you don't have to rent a navigation system and you also have live traffic information via the integrated sim card. The best sat nav I have ever seen.
