WD Red 2x 4TB Set
Why is the set with a larger buffer cheaper than the one with a smaller buffer?
Simplified summary: The technology is slightly different (SMR instead of CMR) which results in the write speed being up to 3x slower. Hence the larger buffer to mitigate this. It is fair to say that the discs can be considered inferior to the others, even if it does not have much of an impact in a system that is almost read-only (e.g. media server). Unfortunately, this is not stated anywhere.
Important to note: The two technologies should not be mixed in one array as the slow write time can cause the RAID controller to think the disc is defective. Of course, when replacing a defective disc, the ideal time to write is /s
Current situation: All 3 leading disc manufacturers are currently sneaking these inferior discs into the product range without indicating this.
May I express here my hope that Digitec will start to show the technology and write rate. It is clear that they have little influence on these large manufacturers, but at least the buyers could be informed. Perhaps an article would be nice.
